In line with her vision to mentor young people and educate them on the law, the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo has sworn-in five (5) elected Executives for the St. Mary’s Senior High School Justice Club.

The five Executives who took the Oath of Office are: Sally Adzokatsey, President; Carmen Afriyie, Vice President; Emmanuella Ankrah, Secretary; Erica Yeboah, Organising Secretary and Nestaline Tettey, Treasurer. The ‘Justice Club’, a novel initiative of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, forms part of the Chief Justice’s Mentoring Programme, a Programme aimed at encouraging young people to take interest in the legal profession. Speaking at the event held at the Assembly Hall of St. Mary’s Senior High School, Chief Justice Torkornoo, who was visibly elated, expressed her satisfaction for a dream come true.
An excited Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo delivering her remarks “I am very happy and excited to be here today and this is a special moment for me. The Justice Club is a baby for me. The law can be very technical but ignorance of the law is no excuse. The idea of the Justice Club is thus to help you have an appreciation of the infrastructure of law in the country. Through the Club, you will have a better appreciation of the concepts of law, justice, equity, fairness, legalities and ethics. You will appreciate and have a better understanding of the structure of the courts and have education on your rights, obligations, entitlements and privileges”, she said. For her part, Chairperson of the Chief Justice’s Mentoring Committee and Justice of the Court of Appeal, Her Ladyship Justice Professor Olivia Anku-Tsede, urged the Executives to discharge their duties with integrity, dedication and compassion.H/L Justice Professor Olivia Anku-Tsede, Chairperson, CJ’s Mentoring Committee

“Having taken your oath, I urge you to embrace the principles of justice, honesty and inclusivity. Lead with empathy, listen with humility and act with courage” she said. The Headmistress of St. Mary’s Senior High School, Mrs. Philomena Owusu Ansah, could not hide her joy and pride in giving her remarks.

“St. Mary’s Senior High School is the first school to launch the Justice Club. To have the Chief Justice here means it is so dear to her heart. We are grateful to the Chief Justice as this action will inspire the young girls of this school to read law. To the Executives, I believe this is an enviable Club. You have a big task and do not let anyone down”, she said. The President of the Justice Club, Sally Adzokatsey, in her response promised to discharge her duties according to the admonition of leading with truth, virtue and sincerity.

The formation of Justice Clubs in Senior High Schools across the country is to provide mentorship and impart knowledge on the law to members. Under the Chief Justice’s Mentoring Programme which has been in existence for the past sixteen (16) years, six schools have been selected to pilot the Justice Clubs. They are namely St. Mary’s Senior High School, Chemu Senior High School, Accra High School, Tema Senior High School School, Presbyterian Boys School, Legon and SOS – Hermann Gmeiner International College.
