Courtesy call by the UN Envoy to the Judicial Service

The UN Secretary General’s representative for West Africa and the Sahel Region, Mr. Leonardo Santos Simao, has paid a courtesy call on the Judicial Service. The meeting sought to identify opportunities for partnership and support, leveraging on the Judiciary’s expertise in electoral dispute resolution to enhance electoral processes and strengthen democratic institutions in the sub-region. Mr. Simao said the UN acknowledged the pivotal role the Judiciary plays in maintaining the rule of law and upholding democracy and emphasized the need for collaboration, citing the presence of various international agencies in Ghana working on diverse projects.

Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo in her remarks noted that the UN could collaborate and support the Judicial Service in reviewing and updating laws to enhance the judicial system, putting together training and development programs for judicial officers and staff and in the transition from manual to digital systems and processes, particularly in the development of web-based libraries, Monitoring and Evaluation Software, Automation of Courts and Digitalization of Court Records, among others.

The Chief Justice noted that by leveraging on technology, the Judicial Service aims to enhance its operations, improve access to justice and increase transparency.
